"Knowledge is power. I believe in the power of the individual. I believe that one determined, skilled person can do just about anything. That's why I keep a Hoover File, as in J.Edgar."..."I decided that it would be in my best interests to keep what I came to call my Hoover File. The Hoover File is an information file-whenever I heard anything about someone, I'd write it down and file it away for future reference. In my twenty-five years in family court, I only had to pull out my Hoover File once."...."Then I stood up and walked over to a file cabinet and pulled out a drawer. I pointed to a row of files. 'It's amazing how much information I have collected over the years on your breakfast buddies, I said. They're discussing me? You'd think they would be more concerned with my discussing them!"-Judge Judy Sheindlin in "Beauty Fades, Dumb is Forever".

Judge Judy is right, Knowledge is Power! Keeping a file on the people involved in your case may bring about a quick finish. Wouldn't it be interesting to find out that your CPS worker has a criminal record? Or maybe your child's attorney has been sanctioned by the State Bar. A wealth of information is available, if only you knew where to find it. Most of what you are looking for can be found for free, or for the cost of phone calls, copies, and faxes. On this page you will find links that will be of interest in doing background investigations. I will only list resources that can be accessed for free, or have administrative fees only(like the above mentioned copy fees, ect.).

When checking out an attorney, check out Oregonshyster first. You can find out if the attorney has had any complaints filed with the Oregon Bar Association. If the attorney is or has been a member of a Bar in another state, it would be wise to check with that state's Bar as well.

If you find an attorney has had complaints filed, you can request a copy of the file from the Oregon State Bar by calling 503-620-0222 or toll free in Oregon 800-452-8260. The first 12 pages are free, after that is a nominal fee.

Below are some links for doing criminal background checks! This is FREE information, you do not have to pay for this! Beware of sites that ask you to pay for criminal background checks.
